If you have a symptom that needs investigating, or you have already been told that a scan would help, waiting to find out what is going on can be difficult. At Chelmsford Private GPs, we can arrange private MRI, CT, X-ray and ultrasound scans at Phoenix Hospital, where our clinic is based.
The process starts with a consultation with one of our GPs, who will assess your symptoms and medical history and decide whether imaging is appropriate and which scan is most suitable. Phoenix Hospital provides imaging for both adults and children, depending on the type of scan and the child's age.
Once your scan has been completed, it is reviewed and reported by the hospital's radiology team. Your GP will then send you the report, explain the findings in straightforward language and advise you on what to do next.

At Chelmsford Private GPs, you do not need to decide for yourself which scan to book. You will have a consultation with one of our GPs first, so we can look at the full picture and arrange the most appropriate investigation.
Here's how it works:
1. A GP consultation first
We take the time to understand your symptoms, medical history and concerns. If you see us in person, we can also carry out an examination where appropriate.
2. The right scan, chosen by a doctor
If imaging would help, your GP will decide whether an MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound is appropriate and arrange the referral to Phoenix Hospital.
3. Your scan at Phoenix Hospital
Your scan takes place on site at Phoenix Hospital in Chelmsford, so you do not need to travel elsewhere for your imaging.
4. Your results, explained by your GP
Once the scan has been reported, the results are returned to the GP who requested the investigation. Your GP will explain the findings and advise what happens next.
We cannot guarantee a particular appointment time, as availability depends on Phoenix Hospital. However, scans may be available from the same day to within a week, depending on the investigation and appointment availability.
We will give you a realistic idea of likely timings when you speak to us.
New patients can see us face to face or by video where appropriate, and existing patients can also book a telephone appointment. GP consultation appointments are available in the early mornings, evenings and on Saturday mornings.
Some imaging providers allow you to book certain scans directly. While that may be appropriate for some people, arranging your scan through a GP has some important advantages.
Yes. Phoenix Hospital provides imaging for children as well as adults, although the appropriate scan depends on the child's age and clinical circumstances.
If your child needs an investigation, one of our GPs can discuss their symptoms with you and advise whether imaging is appropriate and which type of scan may be suitable.
The exact preparation and appointment arrangements will depend on the scan you are having. The hospital will provide any specific instructions before your appointment.
An MRI scan uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. It is often used to look at areas such as the brain, spine, joints and other soft tissues.
An MRI scan usually takes between 15 minutes and an hour, although this can vary depending on the area being scanned.
Before referring you, your GP will check that an MRI is appropriate, and you will be asked safety questions before the scan. If you are anxious about enclosed spaces, let us know during your consultation so we can discuss this with you.
MRI scans are available for children from roughly 5–6 years old, depending on the individual circumstances.
A CT scan uses X-rays to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body. Your GP will discuss whether a CT scan is appropriate for your symptoms and arrange the referral if required.
At Phoenix Hospital, CT scans are available for adults aged 18 and over.
X-rays are commonly used to look at bones and joints, as well as areas such as the chest and lungs. The X-ray itself usually only takes a few minutes.
X-rays are available for children and adults of any age where clinically appropriate.
If you have had an injury and think you may have broken a bone, please go to A&E rather than booking a private appointment with us, as we cannot guarantee an urgent X-ray or immediate reporting.
Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of structures inside the body. It can be used to look at soft tissues, abdominal organs, muscles and other areas.
Ultrasound does not use radiation and typically takes around 10–45 minutes, depending on the type of examination.
Some ultrasound scans require preparation, such as arriving with a full bladder. You will be told if this applies to your scan.
Ultrasound scans are available for children and adults of any age where clinically appropriate.
After your scan, the hospital's radiology team will prepare a report and send it back to the GP who referred you.
Your GP will review the report and send the findings to you, explaining what they mean and recommending the appropriate next step. This may be treatment, reassurance, further investigation or referral to a specialist.
We can also share your results with your NHS GP so that they have the relevant information about your care.
If you need a specialist opinion, we can usually refer you within the private sector, but can also refer you back into the NHS in certain circumstances. Where cancer is suspected, we can refer you quickly onto the appropriate NHS pathway.
Everything starts with a GP consultation. Consultation options include:

The final price depends on the type of scan and the area being examined. We can confirm the likely cost when you speak to us and before the scan is arranged.
You may see full-body MRI scans advertised elsewhere at a very different price. We arrange imaging to investigate a specific concern discussed with your GP, so the cost depends on the scan you actually need.
If you have a symptom that has been worrying you, or you have been waiting for a scan and would like to explore your options sooner, our GPs can help.
It starts with a proper medical assessment so that you can understand whether a scan is appropriate and, if it is, which investigation is most suitable.
