Blood Tests and Diagnostics

Fast, reliable blood tests and diagnostics, because understanding your health shouldn’t wait.

Sometimes you simply want answers.

Perhaps you have been feeling exhausted for months, have ongoing symptoms that have not improved, want to check your cholesterol or diabetes risk, or have a family history of a particular condition and would like reassurance. Whatever has brought you here, having concerns about your health is reason enough to seek advice.

At Chelmsford Private GPs, we provide convenient access to private blood testing without the need for an NHS referral or waiting list. More importantly, we provide clinical interpretation of those results so that you understand what they mean for you.

GP-Led Blood Testing

Blood tests are only useful when they are interpreted properly.

A laboratory result on its own rarely tells the whole story. A result that falls slightly outside the reference range does not necessarily mean that something is wrong, while results that appear "normal" can sometimes still be relevant depending on your symptoms and medical history.

At Chelmsford Private GPs, all blood tests are reviewed by one of our experienced GPs and interpreted in the context of:

  • Your symptoms
  • Your past medical history
  • Medications you take
  • Family history
  • Your reason for having the test

Patients receive a personalised email explaining their results in clear, straightforward language together with any recommendations or next steps. Where results are more complex or require further discussion, we will arrange a telephone consultation.

Our aim is not simply to provide laboratory numbers, but to help you understand what those results mean for your health.

Private blood testing at Chelmsford Private GPs

Why Choose Chelmsford Private GPs?

Your appointment takes place at Phoenix Hospital in a calm, private setting.

One of our doctors will discuss your concerns with you, advise which tests are most appropriate, and take the blood sample during your appointment.

As experienced local GPs, we believe blood testing should form part of a wider clinical assessment rather than being offered as a stand-alone laboratory service.

Our doctors have extensive experience across:

  • General medicine
  • Women's health
  • Men's health
  • Mental health
  • Lifestyle medicine
  • Preventive healthcare

Because we are GP-led, we can help ensure that you have the right tests for your situation and avoid unnecessary investigations.

How Does It Work?

1. Book Your Appointment

Appointments can usually be arranged quickly.

A 30 minute new patient appointment is £160 and allows full discussion of your symptoms, medical history and examination before deciding which bloods are required. A 15 minute existing patient appointment is £95. Blood tests are done then and there by the GP reviewing you. The costs of the blood test(s) will be in addition to this.

Please note. In certain circumstances, where only the blood result is needed without a consultation, we can do this for a flat charge of £30 for a venepuncture appointment and the emailed report. The costs of the blood test will be in addition to this.

Please discuss with our team when booking and we can advise you what is required.

In order for our bloods to get to our London laboratory on the same day, we do our blood tests Monday to Friday before 4pm.

2. Attend Your Consultation

We discuss your symptoms and concerns, advise which tests are appropriate, and take your blood sample during the appointment.

3. Receive Your Results

Most standard blood tests are available within 24 -48 hours, although some specialised tests may take longer.

Your GP will review and interpret the results alongside your clinical history and provide a personalised written summary by email. If further discussion is required, we will arrange a telephone consultation.

Which Blood Tests Can We Arrange?

You do not need to know exactly which tests you require before attending.

Many people come to us with symptoms or concerns rather than requesting a specific test, and part of our role is helping determine which investigations are most appropriate.

Common blood tests include:

Diabetes Screening (HbA1c)

Assesses your average blood sugar levels over the previous two to three months and can identify pre-diabetes and diabetes. From £63. Read more about our private diabetes and HbA1c test.

Cholesterol and Cardiovascular Risk Assessment

Measures cholesterol and lipid levels to help assess cardiovascular risk. From £65.

Thyroid Function Tests

Useful for symptoms such as fatigue, weight change, hair thinning, low mood, or temperature intolerance. From £89. Read more about our private thyroid function test.

Testosterone Testing

For men experiencing low libido, fatigue, reduced energy levels or mood changes. From £63. Read more about our private testosterone testing.

PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen)

Used as part of prostate assessment in men with symptoms or relevant family history. From £84. Read more about our private PSA test and prostate check.

Vitamin D Testing

Low levels may contribute to fatigue, muscle aches and low mood. From £87.

Iron Studies and Vitamin B12

Often useful when investigating tiredness, anaemia or cognitive symptoms such as "brain fog". From £240.

Full Blood Count (FBC)

Provides information regarding red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets and may help identify anaemia, infection or other conditions. From £56.

Kidney and Liver Function Tests

Useful as part of a general health assessment or monitoring certain medications and medical conditions. From £125.

What Happens If My Results Are Abnormal?

Most blood test results are reassuring.

However, if something requires further assessment, you will not be left trying to interpret it on your own.

Depending on the findings, we may recommend:

  • Further discussion by telephone consultation
  • Repeat testing where appropriate
  • Additional investigations
  • Referral for imaging
  • Referral to an appropriate specialist
  • Monitoring over time

The purpose of our service is to ensure that test results lead to clear advice and a sensible management plan.

Why GP Interpretation Matters

Many private testing services provide laboratory results without meaningful clinical interpretation.

Blood tests should never be considered in isolation.

An experienced GP can help determine:

  • Whether a result is genuinely significant
  • Whether a mild abnormality is likely to be clinically important
  • Whether findings fit with your symptoms and history
  • Whether further investigation is required
  • When reassurance is appropriate

This clinical context is often the most valuable part of the testing process.

Confidentiality

Your results remain confidential.

We will only share information with your NHS GP if you ask us to do so. Some patients prefer their NHS practice to be informed, while others wish to keep their private healthcare separate.
