Private Testosterone Testing in Chelmsford

Feeling persistently tired, low in mood, or not quite yourself? It is easy to put it down to a busy life or getting older. But sometimes there is a clearer reason, and it is worth finding out.

Testosterone plays a central role in how you feel day to day. When levels are out of balance, the effects can be wide-ranging and are often misattributed to other causes. At Chelmsford Private GPs, we offer private testosterone testing as a proper GP-led service. Your results are not simply sent to you as a number. They are reviewed by one of our experienced doctors, discussed with you in the context of your symptoms, and followed up with a clear plan.

We believe you deserve more than a standalone blood test. You deserve a doctor who takes the time to listen and help you understand what your results actually mean for your health.

Book online or call us on 01245 203 838. We offer flexible appointments including early mornings, evenings, and Saturdays.

What Does a Testosterone Blood Test Check For?

Feeling persistently tired, low in mood, or not quite yourself? It is easy to put it down to a busy life or getting older. But sometimes there is a clearer reason, and it is worth finding out.

The test measures the level of testosterone in your blood. Depending on your symptoms, we may assess total testosterone, free testosterone, or both. The distinction matters more than most people realise. Total testosterone measures everything circulating in your blood, but free testosterone reflects what your body can actually use. It is possible to have a total testosterone result that looks normal and still experience significant symptoms if your free testosterone is low.

Where relevant, we may also look at sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which influences how much testosterone is available to your body. Dr Onen will talk you through exactly what we are checking and why, so you always understand what is happening at each stage.

Your blood sample is taken at our Chelmsford clinic and sent to an accredited laboratory. Results are typically returned within 48 to 72 hours.

Symptoms That May Indicate Low Testosterone

Low testosterone does not always make itself obvious. Its symptoms overlap with a lot of other conditions, which is part of why so many people go undiagnosed for years, or are told everything looks fine when something clearly does not feel right.

In men, symptoms worth paying attention to include:

  • Persistent fatigue and low energy
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Low mood, irritability, or difficulty concentrating
  • Loss of muscle mass or increased body fat
  • Erectile difficulties
  • Disrupted sleep

If any of these sound familiar and have been present for a while, it is worth having a proper conversation with a doctor rather than wondering. We are here to listen without judgment and help you make sense of what is going on.

Testosterone Testing for Women

Testosterone is often thought of as a male hormone, but it plays a genuine and important role in women's health too. Produced in smaller amounts by the ovaries and adrenal glands, it contributes to energy, libido, mood, and muscle tone.

Women experiencing persistent fatigue, low libido, low mood, or difficulty maintaining muscle strength may benefit from having their testosterone levels checked. Elevated testosterone can also be a concern, causing symptoms such as irregular periods, unwanted hair growth, and acne. This can sometimes be linked to conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which Dr Abeyratna has a particular interest in as part of her work in women's and gynaecological health.

If you are unsure whether testing is relevant for you, please do not hesitate to get in touch. We are happy to talk it through before you book.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

We have kept the process as simple and straightforward as possible, because we know that getting to this point often takes some courage.

  • Book your appointment online or by phone. We offer flexible slots including early mornings, evenings, and Saturdays, so there is no need to take time off work.
  • Come in for a short consultation and blood draw at our Chelmsford clinic. No fasting is needed for a standard testosterone test. Where possible, a morning appointment gives the most accurate result, as testosterone levels are naturally at their highest earlier in the day.
  • Receive your results within 48 to 72 hours. Your doctor will contact you directly to go through what they mean and talk through any next steps together.

There is no rush and no pressure. We take the time to listen properly, and we make sure you leave knowing exactly where you stand.

Your Results and Next Steps

What makes our service different from a standalone blood test is what happens after your results arrive. We do not send you a number and leave you to work out what it means. Your doctor will review your results alongside your symptoms and your wider health picture, then talk you through everything in plain, honest terms.

There are a few directions things might go:

  • Results within the normal range. If your levels look normal but you are still experiencing symptoms, we will not simply leave it there. Your doctor will explore what else might be going on and discuss whether further investigation makes sense. A normal result is not the end of the conversation.
  • Borderline results. We may recommend a repeat test or some additional bloodwork to build a clearer picture before making any decisions.
  • Low testosterone confirmed. Where levels are clinically low, treatment options including Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) may be discussed. Dr Onen has a particular interest in men's health and leads our TRT work at the clinic. Any decision to treat is made with you, not for you. We will explain what treatment involves, what monitoring looks like, and what to realistically expect, so you can make a properly informed choice.

If a referral to a specialist is the right next step, we will organise that. Whatever your results show, you will leave with a clear plan and someone in your corner.
