Taxi and private hire medicals in Chelmsford

If your badge is up for renewal, or you are applying for the first time, you need a taxi medical done properly and done quickly. Every day you are off the road is a day you are not earning, and a form filled in wrongly means starting again. At Chelmsford Private GPs, we regularly see taxi and private hire drivers in our clinic in Chelmsford, check you against the DVLA Group 2 standard, and complete your licensing council's own medical form so it is accepted the first time you hand it in. Driver medicals can be completed by any one of our GPs, and Dr Fiona Graham, one of our partners, has a specialist interest in this area. You can see the rest of our driver medicals here.

What is a taxi or private hire medical

A taxi or private hire medical is a medical examination, recorded on your licensing council's own form, that looks at whether you meet the DVLA Group 2 fitness to drive standard. Your council asks for it when you apply for or renew a hackney carriage or private hire driver licence. It is not the same as an ordinary driving licence medical. The standard applied is the higher one, as used for lorry and bus drivers, because you carry the public and work long hours.

Which councils' forms we complete

  • Chelmsford City Council
  • Basildon
  • Braintree
  • Maldon
  • Brentwood
  • Colchester
  • Epping Forest
  • Rochford
  • Uttlesford

If you are unsure, please do get in touch with Chelmsford Private GPs and we can advise.

Most councils issue their own named form rather than accepting a generic Group 2 certificate. It is important to have the correct form for your licensing authority, and we make sure to complete the version your council requires.

How a taxi medical differs from an HGV or D4 medical

Drivers often assume the two are interchangeable, and the confusion is understandable, because the clinical standard behind them genuinely is the same. What differs is the paperwork. You need your council's own form rather than the DVLA's D4, your council rather than the DVLA decides whether you keep your badge, and councils set renewal timetables of their own that do not line up with the DVLA's.

If you need a lorry or bus medical rather than a taxi medical, you want our HGV and D4 medicals page instead.

TFL medicals

If you drive or plan to drive a taxi in London, you will need a TFL medical rather than one of the mid-Essex council forms above. TFL's own medical standard is more detailed than most local council versions, and the form itself asks for a fuller picture of your history than a standard taxi medical does. At Chelmsford Private GPs we do complete TFL medicals, but because of that added detail it is worth knowing what to bring before you book.

For a TFL medical, bring everything you would bring to a standard taxi medical: photo ID, your glasses or contact lenses, a recent optician's prescription if you wear them, and a list of your current medications with doses. In addition, you will need to bring your own medical history: either a printed summary from your NHS GP or full access to your record through the NHS App. Without this, we are not able to give TFL the level of detail they ask for, and the form will come back to you incomplete. If you are not sure how to get hold of either of these, call us before your appointment and we can talk you through it.

How often you need to renew your taxi medical

Three years is the common pattern across mid-Essex, moving to annually once you turn 65, but the cycle is set by your licensing council rather than nationally. Please do check with your own licensing council if you are in any doubt.

What the examination covers

At Chelmsford Private GPs, we test your eyesight, check your blood pressure, and go through your medical history and current medications, all against the DVLA Group 2 fitness to drive standard. Any one of our GPs can then complete and sign your council's medical form so you can submit it.

Your eyesight. The Group 2 vision standard asks for visual acuity of at least Snellen 6/7.5 in the better eye and 6/60 in the poorer eye, with corrective lenses if you use them.

Your blood pressure. The DVLA cardiovascular standard says a Group 2 driver must not drive, and must notify the DVLA, if resting blood pressure is consistently 180 mmHg or higher systolic and/or 100 mmHg or higher diastolic.

Your history and medications. We take the full picture, including any ongoing condition such as diabetes, heart problems, sleep apnoea or epilepsy, and look at how your medications sit against the relevant standards.

If something needs following up, we will discuss how best to help you. This may be that we continue to see you privately at Chelmsford Private GPs or we can write to your NHS GP to ask for their assistance.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Your council's medical form, downloaded, with your own sections filled in
  • Photo ID, either your driving licence or your passport
  • Your glasses or contact lenses, plus a recent optician's prescription if you wear them
  • A list of your current medications, with doses and roughly when you started them
  • Any relevant hospital letters, specialist reports or monitoring records, including cardiology investigations such as an echocardiogram or 24 hour tape, plus glucose readings or CPAP compliance data where they apply
  • If you are having a TFL medical: your full medical history, either as a printed summary from your NHS GP or via full access on the NHS App

If you are not sure which form you need, call Chelmsford Private GPs before you book and we will talk it through with you.

Why book with Chelmsford Private GPs

We are a small, doctor-owned clinic rather than a large provider, and that shapes how this appointment runs.

  • We are a permanent clinic rather than a hotel room or a mobile unit. If a question comes up afterwards, you know exactly where to find us.
  • Same day appointments are usually available, alongside early mornings, evenings and Saturdays, so the appointment can fit around driving.
  • Driver medicals can be completed by any one of our GPs, and Dr Fiona Graham, a partner at Chelmsford Private GPs, has a specialist interest in this area.
  • The same GP holds your records, so your next renewal is quicker and any ongoing condition is already understood.
  • A borderline result does not have to end the appointment. If your blood pressure reads high, or your eyesight or an ongoing condition sits close to the standard, we can often look at it properly in the same visit rather than sending you back to your NHS GP to book again weeks later.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a taxi medical cost?

Prices start from £105. We are not the cheapest option locally, and that is a fair thing to weigh up. What you get for it at Chelmsford Private GPs is a permanent clinic, GPs with experience of completing numerous drivers' medicals, including Dr Fiona Graham, who has a specialist interest in this area, and any potential borderline result looked at there and then rather than sent away to be sorted out elsewhere.

What do they do at a taxi medical?

At a taxi medical, the doctor tests your eyesight, checks your blood pressure, and goes through your medical history and current medications. You are assessed against the DVLA Group 2 fitness to drive standard, the same standard used for lorry and bus drivers. The doctor then completes and signs your licensing council's medical form.

How often do I need to renew my taxi medical?

Most mid-Essex councils work on a three year cycle, moving to annually once you are over 65. Chelmsford City Council, for example, asks for a medical every three years, or yearly if you are over 65. Your own council sets its own rule, so it is worth checking before your licence expires.

What is the difference between a taxi medical and an HGV or D4 medical?

Both use the same DVLA Group 2 clinical standard, so the examination itself feels very similar. The difference is the paperwork and who decides. A taxi medical is recorded on your licensing council's own form and goes to the council. An HGV or bus medical goes on the DVLA's D4 form and goes to the DVLA.

Do you complete TFL medicals?

Yes, we complete TFL medicals at Chelmsford Private GPs. These are slightly more specialist than a standard council taxi medical, as TFL's own standard asks for a fuller medical history. Bring everything you would normally bring to a taxi medical, that is ID, glasses or prescription, and your medication list, plus your full medical history, either as a printed summary from your NHS GP or via full access on the NHS App, so we can complete the form to the level of detail TFL requires.

Where is the clinic based and can anyone attend?

Chelmsford Private GPs is based in Great Baddow, Chelmsford, and we mainly see drivers from Essex however we are happy to see drivers from further afield. Please get in contact if you would like to check whether we can see you.

Do you complete the form for my council?

If your council is not on the list above, call Chelmsford Private GPs on 01245 203 838 before booking and we will tell you whether we can help.

Who carries out the taxi medical at Chelmsford Private GPs?

Driver medicals can be completed by any one of our GPs. Dr Fiona Graham, a partner at the practice, has a specialist interest in drivers' medicals to the DVLA Group 2 standard.
