TSH is usually the primary screening test for thyroid disease.
A raised TSH may suggest an underactive thyroid, whilst a suppressed TSH may suggest an overactive thyroid.

If you are a new patient, we recommend a 30-minute consultation to allow time to discuss your symptoms, medical history and any concerns. It also allows our GPs to explore other potential causes for your symptoms and ensure nothing is missed. This would be £160.
Existing patients can usually be seen in a 15-minute appointment for £95.
The cost of the blood tests are in addition to the consultation fee.
Because blood samples are transported to our London laboratory on the same day, blood tests are performed Monday to Friday before 4:00 pm.
During your appointment, one of our experienced GPs will discuss your symptoms and advise which tests are most appropriate before arranging the blood sample. They might advise additional tests looking for other problems as well such as anaemia, low iron or vitamin deficiencies depending on the outcome of your consultation. This will be all discussed with you.
The blood test itself usually only takes a few minutes.
You do not usually need to fast before thyroid testing.
However, we recommend avoiding biotin supplements (commonly found in hair and nail supplements) for at least three days beforehand, as biotin can interfere with some thyroid blood tests.
Most results are available within 24–48 hours, although some specialist tests such as thyroid antibodies may take longer.
