Testicular Cancer: Signs, Symptoms and the Importance of Early Checks

April 13, 2026

April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month, helping to raise awareness of one of the most common cancers affecting younger men. While testicular cancer is relatively uncommon overall, it is the most common cancer in men aged 15–49.

The good news is that testicular cancer is highly treatable, particularly when detected early, which is why recognising symptoms and seeking medical advice promptly is so important.

Signs and Symptoms

Testicular cancer can develop when abnormal cells grow in one or both testicles. Symptoms can vary, but common signs include:

  • A lump or swelling in one testicle
  • A change in size, shape, or firmness
  • A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum
  • Pain or discomfort in a testicle or the lower abdomen

Not all lumps or symptoms indicate cancer, but any unusual changes should always be checked by a doctor.

When to Speak to a GP

Many men delay seeking medical advice due to embarrassment or uncertainty about symptoms. However, early medical assessment can provide reassurance and ensure further tests or specialist referrals are arranged if necessary.

At Chelmsford Private GPs, our team offers confidential consultations and prompt appointments for men with health concerns.
