The Simple Habit That Could Save Your Life: Checking Your Blood Pressure

May 17, 2025

At Chelmsford Private GPs, we believe that taking control of your health should be simple, effective, and life-changing. One of the easiest yet most powerful things you can do for your long-term well-being is to monitor your blood pressure at home. It takes just a few minutes, requires minimal investment, and could quite literally save your life.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is often called the silent killer because it rarely causes symptoms until it’s too late. Many people feel completely fine, unaware that their blood pressure is creeping up, putting them at risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, and even dementia.

That’s why checking it at home is so important. A small habit now can prevent a major health crisis later.

While many people with high blood pressure feel perfectly normal, some might experience symptoms. These can include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Nosebleeds
  • Shortness of breath

If you ever experience these symptoms, it’s a good idea to check your blood pressure and if it’s high, book an appointment with us.

What is a Normal Blood Pressure Reading?

A healthy blood pressure is typically between 90/60 mmHg and 130/80 mmHg. If your readings are consistently above 140/90 mmHg, you may have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension and you should see us for a full assessment. If your top number (systolic) is over 180 or your bottom number (diastolic) is over 110 consistently over a few readings, this is dangerously high and we recommend you seek medical attention immediately.

How to Check Your Blood Pressure at Home

  1. Invest in a home blood pressure monitor. You can get a reliable one for £20-£40.
  2. Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring ensuring you haven’t just exercised or had any caffeinated drinks like tea or coffee.
  3. Place the cuff on your upper arm and sit with your back supported.
  4. Take two readings, a few minutes apart, and record the numbers.
  5. Keep a diary of these readings as we often like to see the average of these numbers. It gives us a far more accurate picture of what your blood pressure is.

When to See Us

  • If your readings are regularly above 140/90 mmHg.
  • If you experience symptoms like headaches or dizziness.
  • If you are worried about your heart health or have a family history of hypertension.
