Memory Problems and Dementia

May 19, 2025

At Chelmsford Private GPs, we want to acknowledge just how common it is to feel concerned about memory — whether it’s your own or that of a loved one. Maybe you've noticed someone repeating questions or information they’ve already shared. Maybe they seem to lose track of conversations. Or perhaps they’re struggling with everyday tasks that used to be second nature.

It’s also possible you’ve noticed some of these changes in yourself, but you’ve felt hesitant to speak to your GP — perhaps out of fear about what a diagnosis might mean. But here’s something important to remember: Memory problems are not always caused by dementia.

There are many other possible reasons, and that’s where we can help. At Chelmsford Private GPs, our experienced doctors take the time to fully assess memory concerns — and investigate other common causes such as:

  • Sleep deprivation
  • Perimenopause/menopause
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Anaemia
  • Depression

A thorough history, examination, and blood tests can often identify the underlying issue — and many times, the solution may be as simple as a lifestyle adjustment or reassurance. In other cases, it might involve treatment for an underlying condition or referral to a Memory Specialist for further assessment.

Whatever the outcome, we understand how stressful memory worries can be. That’s why we offer kind, supportive consultations that focus not just on diagnosis, but on easing the anxiety that often comes with it.

If you’re concerned about your memory — or someone else’s — please don’t hesitate to book a memory screen with one of our experienced GPs. We’re here to help.
