What to Expect from a Perimenopause/Menopause Consultation at Chelmsford Private GPs

September 22, 2025

First and foremost – a good listening ear!

We take the time to really listen to your story. During your consultation, we'll explore your symptoms, your concerns, and what's currently happening in your life. This helps us build a full picture and truly understand what you're going through.

Do I need tests to confirm menopause?

We’re often asked about hormone tests, but the truth is, they’re not always necessary. In many cases, your symptoms, age, and family history can be enough to confirm perimenopause or menopause.

That said, we may suggest blood tests to rule out other conditions depending on your symptoms. For example, if you are feeling constantly tired, it is crucial that underlying causes such as anaemia, low iron levels and an underactive thyroid have been checked for.

Examinations

Based on what comes up in your consultation, we may carry out a brief examination. This could include checking your weight, height, and blood pressure as a minimum.

HRT Prescriptions

If HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) is the right treatment for you, we can usually prescribe a three-month trial during your appointment. We'll always assess for any risk factors to ensure it's safe and appropriate for you.

Follow-up and Communication with Your NHS GP

If you're prescribed HRT, we’ll recommend a follow-up after a set period to review how you're doing and make any necessary adjustments. We will also communicate with your NHS GP for continuity of care.

Future Prescriptions

We're happy to continue prescribing HRT and monitoring your progress. However, if you'd prefer your ongoing care to be managed by your NHS GP, we’ll provide a detailed letter for you to take to your surgery for them to take over. We just want you to feel better and don’t mind who does it!

Will I definitely get HRT?

Remember – you are unique. Every consultation and outcome is different. It may be that HRT might not be necessary for you at this stage, or there may be medical reasons (contraindications) why it isn’t suitable. Our decisions are always based on your personal history, examination findings, and any relevant tests.

Whatever the outcome, our commitment remains the same: to ensure you feel heard, supported, informed, and cared for.
