Checking Your Pulse: Why It Matters and How to Do It

June 7, 2025

At Chelmsford Private GPs, we encourage our patients to take an active role in monitoring their health. One simple yet powerful way to do this is by regularly checking your pulse. Your pulse can provide important insights into your heart health and help detect potential issues early.

Why Is Checking Your Pulse Important?

Your pulse reflects your heart rate and rhythm, which are key indicators of cardiovascular health. Monitoring it regularly can help detect:

  • Irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias): Conditions like atrial fibrillation can lead to complications if left untreated.
  • Slow heart rate (bradycardia): A heart rate that is too slow may indicate underlying issues, such as heart disease or an underactive thyroid.
  • Fast heart rate (tachcycardia): A persistently high pulse can be a sign of stress, dehydration, infection, or more serious heart conditions.
  • Signs of poor circulation: A weak or irregular pulse could indicate blood vessel issues that need medical attention.

How to Check Your Pulse

Checking your pulse is quick and easy. Follow these steps:

  1. Find a quiet place where you can sit comfortably and relax.
  2. Choose a location:
    • Wrist (Radial Pulse): Place two fingers (not your thumb) on the inside of your wrist, just below the base of your thumb.
    • Neck (Carotid Pulse): Place two fingers on the side of your neck, just below the jawline.
  3. Apply gentle pressure until you feel the pulse.
  4. Count the beats for 30 seconds, then double the number to get your heart rate in beats per minute (BPM).
  5. Note the rhythm: Is it steady, irregular, or skipping beats?

A normal resting heart rate for adults ranges between 60-100 BPM. If your pulse is consistently too high, too low, or irregular, it may be a sign of an underlying condition.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If you notice:

  • A heart rate persistently above 100 BPM or below 60 BPM (unless you are an athlete)
  • An irregular rhythm or skipped beats
  • Dizziness, shortness of breath, or chest pain alongside an abnormal pulse

It’s important to seek professional assessment.

At Chelmsford Private GPs, we offer heart health checks, including ECGs and comprehensive assessments, to ensure your cardiovascular system is functioning properly. If you have concerns about your pulse or heart health, contact us today for a consultation.

Your heart health matters. Take control by checking your pulse regularly and seeking medical advice when needed.
